Emotional abuse describes ongoing behaviour that undermines a person's sense of worth, safety or reality. Because it leaves no visible marks, it is often minimised — by others and by the person experiencing it — even when its effects last for years.
Behaviours often described as emotional abuse
- Constant criticism, mockery or 'jokes' at your expense
- Withdrawal of affection or silent treatment as punishment
- Blaming you for their moods, choices or behaviour
- Dismissing your feelings as too sensitive, dramatic or crazy
- Conditional warmth — care that depends on your compliance
- Threatening to leave, self-harm or expose you when you disagree
