Financial abuse restricts someone's access to money, work or resources, which can make independence feel impossible. It is one of the most common reasons people stay in, or return to, a harmful relationship.
Behaviours often described as financial abuse
- Controlling all accounts, or requiring you to justify every purchase
- Preventing you from working, studying or being paid
- Taking your wages, benefits or savings
- Running up debt in your name, or coercing you into loans
- Giving you an 'allowance' while spending freely themselves
- Sabotaging your job — interruptions, arguments before work, transport problems
