Grounding works by gently drawing attention back to the present — your body, your surroundings, this moment — rather than trying to force feelings away. Go at whatever pace feels manageable, and stop at any point if it feels like too much.
A simple grounding sequence
- 1Notice your feetFeel them pressing into the floor, or your shoes around them.
- 2Name five things you can seeSay them silently or out loud, slowly.
- 3Name four things you can hearLet yourself really listen for a moment.
- 4Name three things you can touchThe texture of your clothes, a chair, the air.
- 5Say today's date and where you areOut loud if possible — this helps orient the mind to now.
- 6Take one slower breathNo need to control it perfectly, just let it be a little longer.
If grounding doesn't work straight away, that's alright — sometimes it takes several attempts, or a different approach on different days. You might also find our Grounding and Breathing tools useful alongside this.
You might explore these in your own words — there is no right answer, and stopping partway is completely fine.
