Protectors

Why some parts spend their whole existence keeping pain away.

  • Card 1

Protectors are the parts whose role is to prevent overwhelming feeling from reaching you. IFS describes two broad styles: managers, who work ahead of time, and firefighters, who react once pain breaks through.

  • Card 2

    What protectors have in common

    • They formed at a moment when something felt unbearable
    • They are usually much older than the situation you are in now
    • They rarely respond to being argued with or overridden
    • They tend to soften when they feel understood rather than removed
  • Card 3

There are no bad parts. The inner critic, the numbing, the rage — every one of them took on its role at a moment when it helped you survive. They're often stuck in the past, still doing a job that ended years ago. When a part feels heard by Self, it doesn't need to shout. Fighting a part only recruits more protection; befriending it is what lets it soften.
