Fear of abandonment

When the possibility of being left feels like an emergency.

  • Card 1

Fear of abandonment often develops where connection was inconsistent, conditional, or withdrawn as a form of punishment. The nervous system can learn to treat small signs of distance — a delayed reply, a change in tone — as evidence that abandonment is imminent.

  • Card 2

    You might recognise

    • A spike of panic when someone goes quiet
    • Difficulty tolerating normal, healthy space in a relationship
    • Seeking constant reassurance, which soothes only briefly
    • Pre-emptively pulling away so that you leave before you can be left
