Body signals to notice

How trauma responses often announce themselves physically first.

  • Card 1

Trauma responses are physical before they're psychological. Learning to notice the body signals early can create a small window to respond differently, rather than being swept along automatically.

  • Card 2

    Common signals

    • Fight: jaw or fist clenching, heat in the chest or face, a fast heartbeat
    • Flight: restlessness, an urge to move, shallow or quick breathing
    • Freeze: heaviness, cold hands, a sense of the body 'switching off'
    • Fawn: a knot in the stomach, a tight smile, rapid nodding or agreeing
